Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
